A sad day for all.

The first court case involving the RIAA vs. Jammie Thomas has ended after just one week.  The jury ruling found that Jammie Thomas, a single mother, was indeed guilty of downloading and sharing 24 songs on KaZaA, a P2P (really old one anyway) file sharing app.

The court ruled that Thomas must pay $9,250 per each song infringed, leading to a grand total of roughly $220,000.

Lets allow a few moments to let that sink in for a moment.

Each song infringed is worth $9,250 freaking dollars.  Thomas could have potentially lost a maximum of $150,000 per song, which could have amounted to a whopping $3,600,000 dollar fine.

Never mind that Ms. Thomas is a single mom.  Never mind that Ms. Thomas didn't use the songs to line her own pockets.  Never mind the fact a single DRM free song from the iTunes store is only $1.29.  Never mind the fact that the RIAA still has 20,000 more cases to take to court after this precedent.

Today could very well be the day the recording industry unplugged the music from its fans.

WTH!? $220,000!?!? That's insane. It will take more than their lifetime to settle all similar cases. XP
