24 hours with Resident Evil…5

Every once in a while, a few friends of mine attempt to stay up and play games for 24 hours straight.  One of them almost always falls asleep halfway through the process, the other accomplishes it once every blue moon, while the third guy always stays up.  Is he the most hardcore of the group?  Possibly.  But I think its due more to the fact that the other two habitually wake up early (and consequently pass out early) because of their day jobs.

I joined up with them last Friday.  The game of choice?  At first we were planning on playing Street Fighter IV through the night via online co-op, but as soon as my friend Zack waltzed in flaunting his copy of Resident Evil 5, a sudden frenzy overcame the other two and the game of choice ended up being Resident Evil for the night.

They beat the game the next day.

Turns out that Resident Evil 5 isn't that long of a game.  Takes about roughly an hour to finish a chapter, and there's 6 chapters total.  I went out drinking while they were on chapter 1-2, and by the time I came back they got all the way to chapter 3 something.  Dear mother up in heaven that's fast.

While the controls aren't that innovative even with the new so called "action" setup, it stills plays like Resident Evil.  I'm talking like 1996 Resident Evil with it's archaic tank controls.  It's that old.  Strafing is still non-existant, and you can't even shoot while running.  Every time a swarm of infected enemies gang up on you, the game turns into this hectic game of tag / hide-and-go-seek.

It's definitely not Left 4 Dead.

But as it turns out, despite all the obvious setbacks the game has, this game is serious business.  I've never had so much fun in coop play since…Left 4 Dead.  This is the game Resident Evil 2 should have been.  Too bad it took 10 years in the making.

In a word: Buy the game.  But play it with a friend.
